Lakes of the Coon Creek Watershed District

Coon Creek Watershed District (CCWD) encompasses approximately 107 square miles in central Anoka County. The watershed includes a wide variety of creeks, ponds, wetlands, ditches, and lakes. Major lakes in the watershed include Crooked, Ham, Netta, Cenaiko, Laddie, and Sunrise.

Water Quality

In general, water quality trends in lake clarity, nutrient levels, and sediment concentrations have remained stable over the last 10 years. This stability, amid a suburban development boom in the watershed following the 2009 recession, is evidence that water quality projects, regulatory rules, and pollution prevention activities are effectively maintaining non-degradation in local lakes and streams. Non-degradation refers to preventing a decline or deterioration from current conditions (aka keeping things from getting worse).

Overall, the current trends highlight the need for continued adaptive management to manage local resources as environmental and managerial conditions change.

Water Levels

Central Anoka County has a unique geography that directly impacts water levels in local lakes. Highly sandy soils, combined with a shallow water table, has resulted in lakes that are heavily impacted by regional groundwater conditions. It is not uncommon for lakes in the area to experience water level changes of 2-3 inches over the course of the year. This geography also means that local lakes are highly sensitive to long-term droughts.
